In an editorial published by the Washington Post, Dr Oenone Kubie brings a historical perspective to calls for the repeal of child labor legislation in the United States. Dr Kubie, who completed her DPhil with the Global History of Capitalism project in 2018, describes the complex range of economic, government and social factors that led to reductions in child labor, noting the harmful impact of this practice on both children and adults.

Dr Kubie’s doctoral dissertation, entitled ‘The Swarm: Children in Chicago, 1890-1930’, considered the lives of children playing, working, and living on the streets of Chicago at the turn of the twentieth century. She is a Research Fellow at the Rothermere American Institute, University of Oxford.
